The Darlingford sign was unveiled Jul 5, 1998. It is constructed of bricks manufactured many years ago by the Darlinford Brick and Tile Co. Depicted on the sign are Calf Mountain, symbolic of the area's early history, a grain elevator and a head of grain as a tribute to the generations of hard working farmers, and the War Memorial which symbolizes the communities high ideals of citizenship.
Calf Mountain is the ancient burial mound, 1 1/2 miles south west of town, and the landmark most frequently mentioned in all of the early records of Southern Manitoba. Pioneers attributed its construction to an extinct race of Mound Builders. The settlement of Darlington, later changed to Darlingford, was located near this landmark, where the Boundary Commission trail crossed the Little Pembina River. This village frew and prospered until 1882, when the railroad caome to the area and bypassed the site.
"New" Darlingford was established alongside the railroad, and as wilth most rural communities, its economy revolved around agriculture. Grain growing in this district was first recorded in 1878. The first elevator was erected here in 1899 and was known as the Darlingford Elevator Co. The combination of railroad and elevator provided for bulk handling and shipping of grain to larger markets, which bolstered the local economy.
Schools, an intergral part of any community, have ben in operation in this area since the 1870's. in 1903 the rural school district of Darlingford was formed and the frst school was built. By 1909 this school was too small to accommodate all of the pupils. The present building was constructed in 1910 and by 1921 increased attendance required the use of all four classrooms. In recent years this building was designated as a Heritage site and is now home to a museum and seniors club.
During the first World War, 1914-18, almost 100 young men left our district to serve, some never to return. On July 5, 1921, the Darlingford War Memorial was dedicated in memory of those who gave their lives for their country and those killed in action in both World Wars. A memorial service is heald annually to this day.
